Jeff Sessions Should Ask Cancer Patients about Cannabis

One can only assume that he has never experienced the treatments associated with stage-four cancer.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is actively lobbying Congress to overturn existing law prohibiting federal interference in state medical-marijuana policy. As someone who believes in strong constitutional limits on federal power and the rights of patients to choose, I am deeply disappointed. And as a cancer survivor who wanted the choice for myself, I wonder: does Sessions have any idea what it’s like?  Continue reading

Most doctors would prescribe medical marijuana to children with cancer

The vast majority of doctors said they would prescribe medical marijuana to children with cancer but those who are certified to provide it are more reluctant to do so, a new study found.

The survey showed that 92 percent of healthcare professionals were willing to help children with cancer access medical marijuana but only a third of them were qualified to write prescriptions. Continue reading

Quackery: A Brief History Of The Worst Ways To Cure Everything

From doctors giving women orgasms to cure their ‘hysteria’ to cocaine to sooth toothache and tobacco enemas to revive drowning victims…

It was not unusual for Victorian women to be given orgasms by their doctors – in a bid to cure them of their ‘hysteria’, a common problem said to affect three in four.

Cocaine was also once used to soothe tooth pain – and was famously an ingredient in Coca Cola – while tobacco enemas were a form of first aid given to revive drowning victims in the 18th century. Continue reading

Cannabis ‘One of the Most Valuable of Drugs’ (Scientific American, 1898)

~ Forewords ~
In 1898, Scientific American featured a comprehensive overview of contemporary medicinal cannabis research, prepared by Dr. G. Archie Stockwell. Stockwell noted the use of cannabis as a primary treatment for a wide range of conditions including migraine (“by long odds the best remedy known”), chronic pain, epilepsy, brain tumours, asthma, eczema, anorexia and even to “promote mental cheerfulness.” However, he lamented that “few practitioners understand the real value of cannabis Indica” because of the “varied character of the preparations found in shops.” Continue reading

Daily dose of cannabis extract could reverse brain’s decline in old age, study suggests

Regular low doses of THC dramatically boosted memory and learning in older mice, say scientists, who plan a clinical trial in humans later this year

Older mice given THC improved so much that their performance in tests matched those of healthy drug-free young mice – and benefits lasted for weeks after the infusions ended.

Researchers have come up with an unusual proposal to slow, or even reverse, the cognitive decline that comes with old age: small, daily doses of cannabis extract.

The idea emerged from tests on mice which found that regular, low doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis – impaired memory and learning in young animals, but boosted the performance of old ones. Continue reading

Could marijuana use increase vulnerability to Alzheimer’s?

A new study warns that marijuana use may increase susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease, after finding the drug severely reduces blood flow in an area of the brain affected by the illness.

Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the study reveals that individuals with a marijuana use disorder showed reduced blood flow in nearly all areas of the brain, compared with healthy controls. Continue reading

Conquering Cancer

cancer_02Time magazine starts and essay written by Vice President Joe Biden on cancer saying, “Every day, thousands of Americans hear the dreaded “c word” from their doctor. I know the fear and the numbness that sets in with the cancer of a loved one. What happens next can make the difference between life and death. If there’s a treatment that can help, there’s hope. But for some people, hope is a clinical trial that will ultimately determine whether a new therapy can slow or stop their cancer.”
